Hard to understand why he was out when there were weather advisories all day in the area. I think a sailboat probably would have made it through if prepared.

Qualifies as "a real bad day"

Just sounds like the captains info on the weather was different than others. Ken Thanks for the info, do you know if they allow you to use your own dingy in Monroe harbor or do you have to use there tender service?

They didn't mention the boat type

If my boat acted like that in those conditions, I'd have been sunk a half a dozen times already. It makes me appreciate Oh Joy even more.

from 50 mph winds that came up suddenly? I know the great lakes can get a bit moody at times. I used to work on the big ore boats that carry taconite pellets from Duluth to Chicago and I have seen some storms. Remember the Edmund Fitzgerald that went down in a storm on Lake Superior. I doubt that they were in 50 mph winds long enough for the seas to build to that height. It takes time to build waves that size. I think it is more likely that the waves were about half that size and poor boat handling was the main contributing factor in this sinking.

don't believe much now

I posted the story of Jack Hull and his boat sinking, which was straight from SAIL magazine. Yesterday, we went out and were in about 30 knots, with full sails up (ooops). We didn't bury the rail, and the waves were about 2 feet, maybe 3. Yet, when we came in, people swore they were 6-8 footers, as viewed from the shore. I agree. It takes a while to build up waves, barring a downburst or Durecho.

Lake storm

Before I second guess, the tree that was knocked down suggests that there were some local bursts that were pretty extreme. They might have been hit by one of those.
