I am still having a hard time getting my windless to operate without putting my motherin law in the vberth and having her pull my chain. I have all chain hooked to my anchor. I am wondering if someone has put stainless steel under the hawse pipe and leading it a little further back to give more room to bring the chain down the pipe before it bunches up and stops pulling the chain. I have 300 feet of chain and get tired of pulling it by hand. I do not always have a third person aboard. Any help???

Chronic Problem

I have exactly the same problem with my H45. I have considered building sort of a pointed device under the hawse pipe in order to divert the chain, but haven't done it yet. If I have 2 people on the boat, one goes in the chain locker to clear the chain. If not, I just stick a long wooden dowel down from the top and move it around. Neither of these are very elegant solutions. Apparently the Hunter design people think everyone carries no more than 20 feet of chain. MC

Windlass Jams

David, We all have this problem. Try the archives as I have described both a bar to bring the chain fall further aft and a filler piece to prevent the chain from catching in the vee part of the bow. Both are only partial solutions but normally work when anchoring with up to 30 metres of chain. i.e. 100 feet Regards
