We have a 1991 37.5 and want to install a "Y" valve. Does anyone have any installation suggestions, or better yet, pictures or sketches? Bud Cook

Where do you want to install it?

I the head discharge line? The tank pumpout line? Somewhere else? Installing the valve itself isn't difficult...cut the hose, install the valve--paying careful attention to the direction of flow (the article "Replaceing Hoses" in the Head Mistress forum reference libary includes some tips that will make that a bit easier). Measure the distance from the other side of the "y" to wherever you want it to go...buy enough hose to get there...connect it at both ends. Where you want to install it and what you want to accomplish by installing it does raise some issues, though. So maybe you'd better answer that question before you do anything.

Check Raritan site.

Go to one of the Owner's Manuals under "Tech Support" on the Raritan site. There are some pretty good illustrations of Y-valve hookups. Link below is one example. Then maybe a 37.5 owner can tell you exactly how and where his or hers is mounted.

Yup.

Hi Bud, I've got one on Prospect. Y-valve is on aft bulkhead in Stbd side cockpit locker. Overboard line has a vented loop, tank line is (thankfully) unvented... I don't have a digital camera but Martin from Oasis does so I'll get him to lend it to me and send you the shots if you'd like. I've got a new boat e-mail: esmeral@JamesEwing.com Jim

"Y" Valve Installation

Jim, I think we have talked before or perhaps even met - I suddenly remembered it was West End last Nov! When you referenced Martin on Oasis it all fit together. I know Martin and Tracy very well, but have lost contact with them. I'm not sure I have their current e-mail address. Please ask them to send us a note when you next see them. Regarding pictures or even sketches, this would be a big help. Thanks for your response, Bud Cook "Rum Runner"

One more time, Bud...where do you want to put it?

Whether or not you also need to install a vented loop depends upon whether you want to put between the toilet and the tank, or in the tank pumpout line.

Y-Note

Bud, On our 91 37.5 it is just inside the glass door behind the head and against the aft bulkhead. The vented loop is also inside the same door but against the starboard side and forward. I think I have the diagrams from the manual on the boat. Will look next time I'm down there. Les s/v Mutual Fun

"Y" Valve Installation

Les, Thanks for your reply. Would look forward to any sketches or photos you might have. Did you do the installation yourself? Any tips or advice? Bud

Y-valve

Bud: A couple of things. I just changed almost my entire waste system plumbing on a '85 31' (not a fun job, but has paid off big time). First of all, listen to Peggie Hall! She knows more about heads, etc. than just about anyone in the business. Second, purchase the very best Y-valve you can get your hands on. I made the mistake a number of years ago of replacing mine with another cheepie and it worked for all of one season. This time around, I bought the "Jabsco" Diverter Valve, which although not the most expensive, did have adjustable discharge barbs which worked best for my system. The other one I'd recommend is the "Whale" diverter valve, which while expensive at almost $80, is worth every cent. Third, LISTEN TO PEGGIE HALL!!!! Smooth, odor-free sailing!! Tim Leighton

Why the Y Valve

I had the same idea with my 35.5. It turned out to be a very complex undertaking as the location for the Y valve would have to be in a very tight spot. I decided that I would just get in the habit of using the macerator which as you know pumps directly overboard from the holding tank. Fred Miller
