My wife is finally insisting that I install a windlass on my 89 35.5 Those of you that own larger Hunters without windlasses must be wandering the same thing, why would they produce these boats without a windlass? I think I have some good ideas about installing one. Has anyone had to install one, if so I and my wife,(who I think stays in pretty good shape by hauling up that anchor) would appreciate the help

Windlass Installation

Putting a Windlass in is fairly straightforward. Just remember that there is no such thing as a 10 minute boat job. I put in a Maxwell 800 on my 37.5. The hardest part was fishing the wire through. It kept catching on electrical wiring but once I got it to the bow, it was a piece of cake. Since I had a vertical, the motor is visible in my v-berth but it's inobtrusive. Works great. chuckwolfe@mail.com

Charles were do you have your chain feed from or drop into with the windlass mounted be hind the chain locker. Also was it a maxwell freedom 800 model?

Can you post pictures or a detailed description of your windlass installation. Info on reinforcement, chain and rode fall, wire size, etc etc would be great. Thanks. Jon K

Same Windlass Question

I have for years been trying to figure out how to add a windlass to my 35.5 without it looking like a true mess. Would appreciate details also.

How my windlass is installed

On my '90 35.5 the manual windlass was installed directly into the anchor locker. It was mounted on a large wooden block and then through bolted. The block is about 1 1/2" thick. This elevates the windlass above the floor of the locker and also adds support. The chain and rode feed down into the locker so it was important to fabricate a stainless steel plate which protects the fiberglass behind the bow roller. This little plate is screwed right to the deck. I'll be replacing it in a year or two, since it does wear from anchoring. I would think an electric windlass could be installed in the same location, but I'm kind of old fashioned about that. Since I'm the anchor crew on our boat, I'm the one who has to be content, and I like the setup.
