On a broad to close reach in 6.5 knts of wind I can only achieve 1.5 knts under classic main alone. I then jump up to 4.8 knts when I unfurl my 110 headsail. Any sugestions how I can get more out of my mainsail?

Maybe you are overtrimmed

Maybe you're overtrimmed- very common on a reach. Ease to a luff then trim. On beam and close reach keep the top batten parallel with boom. Also, ease the outhaul and reduce luff tension when winds are that light. Set the boom vang to control the leech. On a broader reach it is easy to get stalled if overtrimmed. None the less, use all your sails in light air, a 155 jib would be great!

Something is not right.

I agree with Kosmo your mail sail is not trimmed correctly. Just for the heck of it how fast can you go with just the headsail? While not really a good thing to do it will give you a goal to shoot for. You should always be able to go faster with just a mailsail than just a headsail. The mainsail should be easier to trim because it has a boom and you should be able to control it better. Perhaps you are not able to get any "shape" to your mailsail. Sometimes this can happen if you are using to heavy of sail in light winds. What type of sails are on your 311? --Dan

I'm on track then.

I thought of just what both of you have said but was worried I might be wrong. It seems difficult to adjust the outhaul and hard to see if the top batten is parrallel to the boom. Now knowing what you said I will focus on making it easier to adjust. It was easy on my Catalina 22. Glad to know where to make changes though. I appreciate both your suggestions. My Beneteau 311 has a clasic main and a 116% genoa. I'll have to run my headsail alone to set my goal, good idea. Thanks!
