I have the opportunity to purchase a 1974 31 foot Contest for $6,900.00. It seems to be in good shape overall (some minor repairs needed) Would Contest owners consider this a good buy? Thanks, Bob

It all depends on

what came with it and how competent you are for the "minor" repairs. I bought a 1968 Islander 30 that needed extensive repairs but I could and did do them all and now have a completely refitted full keel cruising sail boat.

Contest 31

Bob, $6,900 is a steal so it must need work. I bought a 1971 Contest 31 in 1984. In five years I did the following. Replaced the Atomic 4 w/new universal, new 120, new 140, new 180, new MPG, new MPS, new storm sail (all from Hood - they are incredible). Also had to replace the water jacket, put a new bottom on her - make sure your survey checks in detail for blistering. I also replaced all running rigging, had to replace one shroud and one of the backstays. Updated electronics, new depth sounder, I can go on. I think the important thing to remember is that Contest is built like a brick you know what and any improvements will hold their value much more than a convential production type boat. I would also recommend doing all/most of the work yourself. No one can do a great job at stripping/finishing your rubbing strake and cockpit gratings/seats, or keep the red wood teak below shining - trust me. Good luck - let me know what you end up doing - a good Contest 31 is very hard to find. Once she is in good shape - you will have a classic blue water that you can trust. Fair winds.
