I was at a Hunter dealer the other day and the salesman told me the new Catalinas now used cast iron instead of lead, any truth to that?

I think they've all switched over to cast iron now because the cost of lead is through the roof.

Any Idea What Year They Started.

Are all of the Catalina 309's now cast iron keels?, What about the 310's?

What was the last model years of lead?

Re: Any Idea What Year They Started.

Catalina was still running ads in the major sailing magazines as recently as this past January that said all their keels are lead; they were using this to distinguish their boats from most other production manufacturers. All of the 310's are likely lead, since their production stopped several years ago. Not sure if the 309 uses the exact same keel, but I think that hulls at least through #150 are lead.

The brochure states that Catalina only uses lead keels and that's one of the reasons they cost more than the other big production boats. Since lead is heavier than cast, they would either have to make a larger keel or change the stated ballast weight.

Not to knock the Hunter salesman, but I take everything that a salesman says with a grain of salt and I'm sending off an email to Catalina right now to confirm the keel material on the 309.

The lead keel on the 309 was one of the main reasons I'm inclined to get the Catalina. I don't mind paying more, but I want to get what I want.

I hope the following email that I received from Catalina puts an end to all speculation on the material that is used for their keels. I would go back to that Hunter salesman and shove this in his face and make him eat it....

" thanks for the tip.......guess that is a good sign to hear that the competition is resorting to some extreme fabrications.....(we must be doing pretty well then!?) as we are still using only solid lead wing or fin keels.on all our models."
