Spent Sat. morning looking for a small but pesky leak in the aft cabin of my 2004/306. Hard rain or washing the cockpit floor results in the rearmost cushion in the aft cabin getting slightly damp. I pulled the port side overhead access panel in the rear berth and armed with my trusty Mag-Lite began my Dick Tracy thing. Small amount of water in the low area at the rear lip of the overhead molded liner... fills up and most drips into the cavity behind the aft berth wall (hope that drains somewhere)but a slight drip on the inside is staining the base of the wall and wetting the cushion. Turn off the Mag-Lite and wait for Mr Sunshine to reveal the problem...Knew it wasn't going to be that easy. Dried the water and headed topside for some fresh air and to turn on the hose, then back below with fresh batteries to play the waiting game. It didn't take long. Drip, drip from the wires that penetrate the port side wall of the steering cavity under the aft most panel that is the cockpit floor..Bingo!! Back up topside with a cold beer to plot my next move. No clear plan comes to mind so let's take the new boat apart. Only four screws secure the panel but it only comes off ONE way> put the helm seat/step in the upright position, lift the panel slightly and slide it backward and off the boat. The cavity contains spider webs, small debris, the steering linkage and the sought after wires carefully protected by convoluted tubing. Closer inspection reveals the source of the problem. The wires originate at the base of the pedestal, run through the tubing along the port wall of the cavity and are sealed where they enter a hole in the fiberglass by about 1/4 pound of 4200 (Been a good place for a grommet/drip loop). Turns out water draining through the seam in the cockpit floor drips onto the convoluted tube which has the slit turned upward, enters the tube and has an unobstructed conduit to the interior of the boat without having to mess with that pesky 4200. Sealed the end, turned the slit down and taped the tube from front to back...no more water leak. Also replaced the cotter pins that secure the linkage to the rudder that were rusting away (must have been a different type of stainless)...Just getting to know my new girlfriend! Have a great day!!

thanks

Thanks for the info, Mking. We have had an occasional leak in the aft cabin on our 306, but it seems to have happened only when using a hose to wash down the cockpit. Maybe we'll check the area you describe. Regards, Jay
