303 chainplate

Hello, I'm new to the site. Just bought an '85 Pearson 303. Seems there were a few more problems than just everything leaking. In addition to lots of core rot, I am now looking at a rotted chainplate. In addition to the bulkhead brackets being broken. Anyone know of a bone yard with parts? I need a starboart chainplate. (Stress-corrosion cracking.) As an alternative, can anyone think of a reason not to run a 2x1/4 flat bar out the boat with out the 90 degree welded turn and using a more normal chainplate cover/ cap at the deck? Or weld over the existing plate (below the bend). That would let me align the holes easier (I think). Thanks, Tom

why not weld?

The current chainplate turns a 90 degree angle as it exits the boat. This is a welded connection. I would have even more welded area than this and this weld would be well above the stress cracks. The chainplate would be extremely expensive to recreate and impossible to align the holes to those in the boat (fill and re-drill). And I can't even find "quality stainless" (316) locally. But I sure don't want to think about it coming apart. If I am convinced to replace, I would want to think through the idea of not having the 90 degree turn at the deck and using a more conventional deck cover. Thanks again, Tom

find metal

I used 316 stainless for my plates and I ordered it from Metal Express 704 392 9522. The only plate that had to be welded on A P35 is the foreward plate that anchors the roller furling There is nothing wrong with welding new metals just don't weld new metal to old chainplates I would be glad to tell you how I fabricated mine if you care to call 863 559 1166 Roscoe
