Here's what I know

Basically the tall rig mainsail is 2' taller and the the foot of the mainsail is 6" longer which makes for a larger, higher main. There are two versions of both rigs, with and without bowsprit. A tall rig or a standard rig with a bowsprit is going to have a foretriangle base measurement that's 6" longer than either without a bowsprit. All of this makes the tall rig more suited to light wind sailing and less suited to high wind sailing. Therefore you will find more tall rigs in Southern CA and more standard rigs in San Francisco Bay. My recommendation is that you find out what the preferred rig is for your sailing area. The details can be found at the attached link.

tall rig or not

when we started looking for or 30 we wanted a tall rig, shoal keel, and 150 genoa. we saw so many poor boats that we wound up with a standard rig, fin keel, and 135 genoa 1991 mkii that was loved by previous owners. forget the small stuff and look for the right boat.
