Recently purchased a 30' Hunter 1978. This site has been a great help in answering some questions I had and clearing up some minor problems. The one thing that I wish I could change on this boat is the mast rigging port and starboard. Is there a way to move it either in or out to get it out of the center of the walkway? Has anyone done this before? Also the cockpit is really crowded. Would a smaller wheel be a good idea? Still think its a great boat and would buy it again! Thanks Steve Rainey

Smaller wheel?

Steve: I don't think you can get a much smaller wheel, but this boat is so easy to sail you may be able to get away with it. If you check out the archives you will find several references to moving the traveler to the cabin top. Mr. Cherubini will give you some suggestions regarding this modification, which is not really recommended. If I had one of these boats, this would not be a mod that I'd make. I'd look at moving up to a later model with a larger cockpit to accomodate your lifestyle.

Moving rigging

Mr Rainey-- Please read over some of my archived and still-live posts about altering standing rigging under Hunter 37 and Hunter 33 topics. You are welcome to EMail me if you have any further specific questions. The rest of you-- I won't rehash this topic again here too!! But as a forewarning-- the rigging is there for a reason. If it's inconvenient, you may not be thinking the right way about the nature of sailboats. Sail on. J Cherubini II ('co-designer' of 1973 Hunter 30 Mk 1) JComet@aol.com
