As my first winter arrives on my new used H34 (1983) I found myself on the hairy edge of 30 amps. Living aboard and using mainly electric heat coupled with the hot water heater, battery charger, TV, DVD, VCR, coffee pot etc.,requires "more power" as Tim the Tool Man says. So I bought a 50 amp to two 30 amp yoke for the dockside end. I installed a new 30 amp outlet to the left of the engine instrument panel (easily accessable from behind in the aft cabin), snaked a 30 amp cable along same route as installed 30 amp cable to back of circuit panel. Installed a new small panel with a 30 amp double pole main breaker and one spare 15 amp breaker to the right of the main panel. Wired the old starboard side breaker and hot water heater breaker to the new main breaker and no more juggling loads to avoid popping breakers! But most of all....no more waking up at 3 a.m. shivering because a breaker tripped. For those of you who wonder why is this guy using electric heat it's because the boat is left unattended all day long and most weekends. I do have a installed Volvo diesel heater but don't much care for the stink if the wind blows.
