3 questions

My Vega sits in the desert waiting for me to work on her. I have
three questions that the group may be able to help me with. The first
concerns hairline cracks in the keel that seem to leaked rusty
colored water. My surveyor suggested that I drill holes in the keel
to let any water contained there drip out before filling in the
cracks as recently described by the group. My question is - where
abouts should I drill these holes and how long do you think it would
take for the spaces in the keel to dry out prior to my filling in
holes and cracks. Second question concerns the need to buy some new
wrenches etc. Do I need metric? Third questionis about wood.
Obviously teak is the preferred wood for exterior projects but it is
very expensive. Are there any other less expensive woods that are
suitable for exterior use and what woods are best for interior
upgrades? I appreciate all of the useful information that I
obtain from the site.
Peter-
Have you removed the drain plug in the keel found on the starboard
side near the bottom of the keel and about 2/3 back? It may be
covered with bottom paint.

Richard, Thanks for the feedback. I did not know about the drain
plug. I will have a look to see if I can find it when I go home for lunch.

Metric wrenches are probably the best bet, assuming you have the
volvo or albin engine. The bolts for cockpit floor are 10mm. Most
metric and english sizes are interchangeable except for 7/16. As to
wood Mahogany is good for interior work and can be used outside to
but would need to be finished unlike teak.I have used a african
mahogany but do not like it as well as Honduras.

Thanks Richard. I will start to work on some minor repairs and some
wood replacement projects within the next couple of weeks. I was
supposed to retire effective August 1st. but unfortunately my
department was unable to find a suitable replacement. I have
indicated that I will stay on until either January or early next
summmer so that they can extend the search. I am hoping to have the
boat in the water by next May.

Thanks Scott - nice to see the word spanner too!!! It has taken
several years for me to change from spanner to wrench!

Hmmmm .... my plug was on the port side, and there was another #10
screw below it, right at the very bottom of the side of the keel.

Richard, At the moment I am undecided. I would like to take her back
to the NW. My wife wants me to go to the Gulf Coast because we have
kids and grandkids down in Texas. The alternative would be San Diego
- the closest salt water outside of Mexico. My truck pulls her quite
easily but the cost of taking her back to Washington for next summer
will be a consideration, especially as I will be retired by then.
I've got nine or ten months to decide. Where are you located?
