3 new questions..one old boat!

Hi all,
After my first season on our "new" 82 h27, I'm finding the basics of sailing coming back to me fast, and we are having a ball. That said, I need some advice:

1: sail trim: this is a great boat, and she's very forgiving and easy to sail, but I'd like to squeeze a bit more performance out of her. It seems like you can get 75% of her hull speed out of her pretty reliably, then spend 90% of your time looking for that last few knots. We're on a beam reach or broader quite a lot, due to how our marina is situated in relationship to the prevailing winds. Two things bother me...no down haul on the main, and my inability to find that perfect trim in winds that shift allot on our inland lake. Should I think about a down haul, or maybe a custom built traveler, should I think about a gennaker to get more sail, on those broad reaches, or is that last knot or so just elusive due to lack of knowledge? If so, how do I go about getting that knowledge. Knowing how to sail her and knowing how to do so well are two different animals, I think.

And...does anyone know how the head on the 82 h27 is vented? Vent doesn't seem to be working, and if we do t crack the seal on the inspection hatch were sailing with an 11 gallon poop bomb....

82 Hunter 27 = Cherubini Hunter. Why don't you also post in the Cherubini forum? Particularly about the vent question. Also in case the topic has been covered before, but the participants in the thread are not currently following the forum, try a search specifying the Cherubini forum.

ive been sailing my 1980 h27t for two years in pensacola bay, different from a lake i know but i can definitely tell you that you dont need a traveller, change that mainsheet out to a dual tackle continuous mainsheet system, need two fiddle blocks on the boom and two fiddles with becket and cam cleat on the cabin top with snap shackle attachments, when on a reach take up main trim with the leeward tackle (wich will be closer to the boom at this point of sail) break the snap shackle loose on the windward tackle and move it under the boom to the toe rail. now its a vang to use for controlling shape and draft while the other controls boom angle. this is more adjustment ability than the 27 could get with a traveller and cheaper as well.

pm me and we can exchange numbers if you have any h27 questions, ive restored mine from a hurricane salvaged boat and other than plumbing and inboard (mine got converted to an outboard a long long time ago) ive been through everything on the 27 you could think of, exceeding hull speed is possible but gets scary quick on the tall rig atleast.

no idea about the head, i dont have one (i use my marinas bathrooms)
