I want to change my 14x12 prop to a 3 blade. Can anyone tell me what size to buy and/or best place for price ? I want a sail prop, not powerboat..

3-blade

I went from a 14X12 2-blade to a 14X11 3-blade prop on my 1980 H33. Made a huge difference in backing up, and making headway in strong seas. Ordered it a year ago from Wilmington Prop in Wilmington, CA - $280. /c s/v Twilight

also looking at 3 blade switch

I have a 78 H33 with the 2QM15 Yanmar turning a 2 blade prop. I can't remember the size of the prop at this moment. The boat backs poorly and the engine rpm's top out at 2000 before black smoke starts pouring out of the exaust. Someone suggested a three blade with a little less pitch to bring the rpm's up and gain a little more boat speed in the process. Would love to hear more from h33 owners that have made the switch.

Bob, you shouldn't be blowing black smoke at 2K rpm. Black smoke is usually the result of over loading the engine, this can happen if your prop is fouled with barnacles and the like. Also a fouled prop will make reversing almost impossible. It's amazing how performance improves with a clean prop.

Bob - Check for a plugged exhaust riser. It will cause the symptoms which you mentioned - black smoke and low rpm. Check the archives for details. Patrick

Thanks for the reply Don but a fouled prop is not my problem. I never run the boat it the prop has not been cleaned within two weeks. The water here is warm and I am a diver so keeping the hull and prop clean is done regularly. I am told that the prop may be over pitched, thus not letting the engine develop full revs.
