2qm20 question

I replaced all the hoses and changed all the filters on my 2qm20 and gave it a good run.

Question - is the oil light/buzzer supposed to go on when the key is turned in the ignition but before the engine is started? Both stop as soon as the engine is on. I checked the oil level and it's fine, but I'm gonna change the oil and filter anyway, which leads to my second question, what oil are you using? I can't find the recommended types listed in the manual anywhere

Good to know.

I got worried because it never used to do that before - I guess it wasn't grounded correctly or something.

If you think about it, when the engine isn't running (but the key is "on") there is no oil pressure, so the buzzer and light will be on. Same for the charging light. So it is kind of a test for these warning systems.

Any engine oil rated for diesels will work. I use Shell Rotella or Canadian Tire Diesel motor oil. SAE 30 or 10-W-30 are my preferred weights.

While we are on the topic, as a general practice you will want to note how long the buzzer takes to come on after stopping the motor. this is an indication of bearing life left. Longer "bleed down" times means tighter tolerances in the bearings and shorter times means things are getting sloppy. you are looking for a significant change in the time to be a heads up that something is wrong BEFORE the motor goes south when you can't afford it to... FWIW

When the engine is stopped there is no oil pressure. That is what the light and the buzzer alarm are indicating before you start the engine. The alternator light should be lit also. The only light that should be off is the water or coolant temperature and that is because the engine is cool and not overheated. There should be a toggle switch to test the coolant temperature light.

That all makes a lot of sense, thank you all.

I got confused because it didn't do that when I bought it - the fact it does now shows that my attentions are bearing fruit I guess :)

Bill - in reference to your comment about the shorter/longer times. Would a longer time be 2 to 3 seconds?

As a follow up I'll drop some useful links in here regarding what oil to use in the transmission - I put in Chevron ATF and then had a minor panic

However, I figured it out, it's all good.

First I found this post

http://www.sailnet.com/forums/1885746-post16.html - which lead to http://shop.toadmarinesupply.com/ma...ction=yanmar&contentname=transmissioncapacity

According to that, I need to use Dexron II/III in the transmission.

Then I went to http://www.t20host.com/cvx/lubelink/...ltiVeh_ATF.pdf and https://cglapps.chevron.com/msdspds/...&docFormat=PDF and according to these two links, Chevron ATF is approved for engines that call for Dexron II/III.

So I'm all good. Man, that took a bunch of googling... hope those links help others with the same issue. Transmission was a KBW10

Yes, Dexron II/III is the right fluid in the Kanzaki Kokykoki KH 18 transmisson on my 3QM30 as well. The other thing that I have seen posted (can't seem to find the link right now) is that the level should be checked by putting the dipstick down the hole without screwing it in.

Rotella 15w40 should work with temperatures between 20 and 100 degrees F. To prevent dry start up, leave the fuel shutoff on and crank the engine for five seconds. Then start the engine.

I read from the Yanmar owner's manual that the transmissions in for the 1gm and 2gm use standard MOTOR OIL just like the engine 30 weight oil or 10w-30w . The 3gm uses tranny fluid in the transmission.

I disagree with Bill. The "bleed down" time he referenced is more an indicator of oil level than bearing wear. It might not be true for all engines, but in my experiance with a 2QM20 and a 3GM30f it is.
