2nd Bilge Pump

I have purchased a Whale low profile automatic bilge pump to augment the OEM pump in my boat which isoperated off a float switch. I have two decisions I need to make regarding installation and could use some advice:

1. Placement - I could mount it vertically on the aft part of the center well of the bilge. This well is the location of the current bilge pump. I have the room to get the pickup even lower than the current pump. However, this would mean that when water gets to about 1-2 inches, both pumps would kick on. Would that be ok? Alternatively, I could mount it as a "high water" pump on the lip above the bilge and it would, then, only kick on in an emergency high water situation. Pros/cons of the mounting choices? I would have the 2nd pump separately wired to the house battery bank.

2. Evacuation hose for the 2nd pump - should I install a dedicated hose for the 2nd pump or T it in to the existing hose going to the manual bilge pump?

Thanks for any input!

The reason for the separate line is that the output from the manual bilge pump will flow through the electric one and back into your bilge. The manual one has check valves so it's far less likely that the output from the electric one will backflow through the manual. Using two hoses also helps maximize the output of each pump. You can only push so much water through that small hose before pressure starts to build
