I have successfully took apart the mixing elbow for cleaning. (thanks to Steve Dion's pictures/advise) I have noticed that inside the elbow, there are some objects that restrict the exhaust flow. I am not sure if they are part of the original design of the elbow or just gunk that crystallized there and should be removed (i.e. by applying more force ...). Also, what is the best method to clean the internals of elbow? Thanks

Replace it

I have heard of people chipping it out or sand blasting it to clean it out, but it is difficult to completely clean it out. If you talk to any mechanic, he will suggest replacing it. Also, the threads are sometimes gouged when removing it. Probably cost the same in the long run. But you will see a horizontal/vertical baffle in the elbow that effectively gets carbonized (rock hard). This can get so coated, the orafice clogs and creates the problem. Your engine may not start (backpressure) or will spew carbon into the water, or you will experience a power loss at the same time. If it isn't cleaned completely or occasionally blown out by running, it will reaccumulate and the problem returns on short order. Also, here is a related link that discussed the ramifications of a bad mixing elbow.

another vote for replacement

If the mixing elbow gets a "breach" betweeen the water section and the exhaust section, serious damage can be done to the engine if water gets into the engine cylinders. Much cheaper to replace and have peace of mind. They aren't too expensive - and get the threaded union while you are at it. Chances are the old one will not be able to be salvaged. I'd replace it too.

You should replace the elbow. If the old one is really not corroded out, you may be able to take it to a radiator shop and have them soak it in their chemicals. It may come clean. Most of the time they are corroded and coked up to a point that it is not worth trying to salvage. The price for the new one was about $95 USD. You also need the gasket.

Where are the pictures posted? I'd love to see them and read the advice.
