Seeking on advice for what rpm level to run the 2gm20f for extended periods of say 1 hr, 3 hrs, 8 hrs. That is, what is the maximum practical rpm for these periods without overly stressing the engine or boat. I have a Hunter 306.

cruisin rpm

appx 2700 to 2900 rpm cruising rpm's You can run this engine all day long at this rpm range!

Me too, but...

Push the tach to read 3000 because it's off by 100 and is really doing 2900 at that reading.

Dittos, and...

Always warm it up(under way) for 15- 20 minutes or so before shutting down. Don't be afraid to run it up to 3200 every now and then, these engines were built to run at 80% of max. for most of their life expectancy.

RPM'S

We ran about 8 or 9 hours a day, for 5 days, with our 1998 2GM20F and usually ran 2500 to 2600 RPM's,no problem. The only problem we ran into was in Jacksonville Fl when we were running into strong winds and current and at 3500 to 3600 the engine overheated. (we were trying to make an opening of a RR bridge). We try to vary the speed during the cruise so as not to stay at the same speed all day. This was our first experience with a diesel engine, and our first Hunter H280, and we are quite happy with the Yanmar. Pete & Crystal "Eastern Sky" Hobe Sound,Fl.

ON OUR H28 WE NORMALLY CRUISED OUR...

2GM at 2500 RPM for hours on end. Increasing the RPM made very little difference in boat speed. Test your boat speed at 500 RPM increments. We found on ours that the only thing we gained above 2500 was increased fuel consumption and maybe a half knot. Regards, Terry

My RPM

On extended trips I always cruise my 2GM20F (H-30T, 1991) at 2750. A number of times I have run 8-10 hours without hardly changing the RPM and the engine performs great. I monitor the water temp and oil pressure gauges I added and they always remain constant. Anything over 2750 only increases my fuel consumption and gives a negligible speed increase.

All Depends..

I've written a lot about this, in relation to hull speed. With my Hunter 326, I run at 3000 rpm all day, sometimes more. I'm still almost 2 knots below hull speed, but that's why I say this engine is too small for my boat. I have run for quite a while at 3300 also, but not all day.

Will vary

Find a throttle setting around 3000rpm that gives you least boat vibration and use that. I agree, that above 3200rpm you only waste fuel. Good luck red
