I bought a 90 Hunter 30 last year with a Yanmar 2GM20F and am very happy with it. I'm just changing the mixing elbow out for a new one and have a question about the salt water line to the elbow. The boat is currently fited with a vent loop in the line from the SW outlet on the thermostat case to the mixing elbow, yet the service manual shows no need for a vent loop. Who's right. Is the vent loop necessary or is a direct line more efficient? Thanks in advance.

Vented loop

Don't do away with the vented loop. It is there to keep water from siphoning back into the engine when it is shut down. The vented loop is a boat builder specification and is used if the engine is below the water line. The engine maker doesn't know where the engine will be located so he doesn't call it out in his manuals.
