2GM20F install

Hi all,
I took possession of hull#2928 (I named her Vegabond) for the expense
of removing it from the property of the previous ownerso it was free.
However, the boat has suffered over a decade of neglect, ended up on
the rocks in hurricane Georges after being hit by another boat, has a
cracked forestay chain plate as a result of her rough handling from
hurricane Georges, lost her forward hatch in hurricane Wilma, and so
on. One of the previous owners sold the prop and shaft of this
engineless vessel for some outrageous price. And the galley was
brutally removed by the previous owner in order to facilitate the
installation of an oversized fuel tank.
I don't make much money living here, in the Florida Keys, aboard
Vegabond, and I have a lead on a good running Yanmar 2GM20F and
working transmission for under $2K, and the owner is willing to take
payments from me if I decide to buy it. My question from this long
winded introduction is if the Yanmar will fit, and if anyone has heard
of a similar installation.
Any info, tips, and suggestions are greatly appreciated. Also, any
leads on a complete prop/shaft assembly would save me a great deal of
time, as I fear I may need to have one custom madewhile loosing the
"variable pitch" prop that was designed with this boat in the process.
Thanks to all that reply in advance,
Ted

Hey Ted,

The 2GM20 can be installed in the vega, a lot have done it. Just do
a search in this forum on 2GM20. It is the same block as the 2GM,
also a lot of those have been installed. I am in the middle of a
repower with a 2GM rebuilt by Al Holtzer in Schooner Bay Marina in
Wisconsin. He does an awesome job of a rebuild. The engine cost me
$3100 with a 1 year warranty. Drive shafts and couplings can be
bought from www.a1discountprop.com they have shafting, and also
couplings and drive savers available. I have access to a lathe, and
I am making up some cutlass bearings to fit a 1" shaft to the stern
fitting of the Vega. They will be made from UHMWPE rod, it has
excellent wear characteristics. It is not a standard size bearing,
as the fitting is metric and the shaft is inch. For a small fee I
could make you one for a 1" shaft when I make mine. Good luck on your
Vega.

Hi.:
I think the Yanmar 2GM should fit- I'm using the Yanmat 1GM
and I love it.
You'll need a 25 mm shaft and a 13"/8" right HD prop)(I
hope the stuffing box is still there.)
There's a Yanmar dealer in Key Largo. (Port Engineers,

Hi Ted, I'd be interested in a spare cutlass bearing in 25mm by 1" if you
are going to make a few up.

Ted,
I have a 2GMF in my Vega. It has a 1" shaft. The conversion was done
many owners ago, so I don't know the details.
I have the motor out right now, so if you are interested I could
post some pictures of the engine bed setup, mounts, cutless bearing,
stuffing box, etc.
I don't know if my conversion is the best method, but it has worked
well for many years.
It's a good time to do it, as everything is clean and shiny. I'll be
away for a couple of days so it will probably be early next week to
get everything together.

Hi Ted,

I have a 2GM20 in Lealea. It's tight but it will fit. quite a bitof work but if your reasonably handy you can probably handle it. For $2K I'd go for it if you think the engine is good. It's really morepower than needed for the Vega but I am of the "There's no such thingas too much horsepower" school. d;^)

I didn't do the install so I can't help you there. FYI, I paid$4500for the engine and $3000 labor and parts for the installation tenyears ago. That should give you an idea of how much wrk is involved.

Hi Chuck

Do you have the raw seawater or freshwater cooled version in Lealea? I
have a raw water cooled 2GM in Little Star and with soundproofing
fitted all around there is precious little space for anything except
checking the oil level - and even that is pretty difficult. I can
remove the tappet cover but only after removing the wooden panel that
slides in ahead of the top step.

Photos make the fresh water version look a little wider and higher so
is there enough space to fit this version in the Vega?

Cheers

I have the fresh water cooling David. You're right. It's a bear to work on. Laura has smaller hands and arms so she doesmost of the work like bleeding the injectors while I pump the fuel bulbfrom the cockpit well. Fortunatel, it has been completelyreliable except or fuel problems on two occasions.
