The 2GM on my 89 Hunter is starting to smoke a little. What are the most likely causes of this condition? I could look it up in the owners manual, but you guys always have all the answers and this way is easier.
Colin:What color is the smoke?Blue? = buring oilWhite? = water (like head gasket)Black/Brown? = fuel (like leaking injector/overloaded prop etc)Could be serious could be simple.
Colin,Another posibility for black smoke is the Mixing U-Elbow (where Exhaust and Cooling Seawater discharge are mixed together and go out as a 'Wet Exhaust').Over time they soot up causing a restriction and back pressure. This causes inefficient burn of fuel which causes more black smoke.Mack Boring
My smoke is black/brown colour so perhaps I should change the mixing eldow you mention Dick. How difficult and expensive jod was this to do, could a weekend mechanic do it?
My yard recommends replacing the mixing elbow every three years, and I'm due this winter. It can clog up a lot sooner than 7 or 10 years. Find someone who's done it to walk you through the process. Basically you're just unscrewing it and replacng it. This is such a popular problem that my ship's store keeps the things in stock.I believe the Hunter Owners Web site had photos last spring of just such a job. Check it out in the Archives on this site.
Agree with mixing elbow being likely candidate. When the engine is up to temperature and you're cruising along at 2850 RPM or so, there will likely be some steam comming out also.
