While motor sailing the rpm's on our 2gm 18hp slowed and eventually stalled. I could not re-start. I replaced both fuel filters (neither seemed very dirty)re-primed the engine and it ran well. The next time out, the engine did the same thing. I have research the archives and the general opionion is that the filter in the fuel tank may be the culprit. Does anyone have another opionion or recommendation?

Air

Check to see if you have an air leak on the intake side of the fuel pump/fuel line. If so this air will in effect block the flow of fuel by reducing suction of fuel. This can be done by installing a clear fuel intake hose on the fuel pump. If air bubbles are seen in the fuel line, trace and fix. Good luck!

Generally speaking, If your engine is otherwise

and it stalls....If it WILL NOT restart running well and stalls and will NOT restart unless you bleed it, you are getting air in the lines somewhere. If it DOES start after you wait some time, you are probably fuel starving the engine. If air, maybe low fuel in tank, something not tightened, old hose or chafed through on something, etc. If starved,(and you said filters clean, try checking screen at bottom of fuel pickup in fuel tank.

Self stalling motor

also check you engine kill cable. Slight chance that some vibration or crossed cables are causing a loose cable to pull the lever on the engine to the "stop" position. this would react just like a stalled engine.

Fuel Tank Vent

If your fuel tank vent is plugged, air is not allowed inside the tank to displace the fuel being used by the engine. This would allow the engine to start fine after sitting a while, but starve for fuel after motoring. The vent is a perfect home for insects. Check it out. Ken Palmer, S/V Liberty

Another thought

Did you make sure that your water intake strainer is clean? If it is clogged up and restricts water flow, the engine will get too hot and the air too thin- it then chokes out. Happened to me in Barnegat Bay when eel grass gets chopped up by the moter boats props and gets sucked into intakes - usually around /near the bridge where we have to circle until it lifts. I had the same problem on my 88 33.5 with the 2GM with the same symptons that you described. I found the problem to be the fuel tank pickup had become clogged. There is a screen part of the way up the pickup tube. I cleaned the tube and flushed the tank and have not had aproblem in the last 4 time we have been out. I got alot og great help in midsize boat section under "2GM stalling". Bil Feng Shui
