2GM Shifter travel

I have a new 2 me 1986 boat with 2GM20 engine. This summer on occasion I noticed that the transmission would sometimes not engage immediately and would take a few seconds. Upon some discovery I have noticed that when I engage the transmission with the shifter lever it only goes to its limit. If I remove the attachment screw I am able to move the transmission lever a bit further to fully engage. This is the same in both forward and reverse.
Has anyone else experienced this issue ? Is there a way to adjust this so that the shifter cable will provide more range of through ?

Thanks

the shift cable fork may be in the wrong hole on the shifter arm...mine has two holes in the shift lever on the gearbox if yours in in the upper hole and the very end of the lever ...move it down to the next hole closer to the shifting shaft that goes in the the gear box and check it to see if that cleared up your problem.....

Also check the cable mounting at engine end. Make sure its not slipping when shifting.

There is no slippage or second hole in this case. I think my first step will be to remove the fork and add another hole closer to the centre of the shaft. This will allow more travel through the full range and hopefully correct the issue.

just some additional info: as i recall on our 1996 boat the yan transmission control morse cable fits into a movable linkage on the gearbox , aft of the engine. if this morse cable sticks or breaks off the lever , you can still shift from forward to neutral to reverse by moving the link by hand . we tied a string to the linkage and shifted by hand for 2 weeks when replacing our morse cables ...
