Want a quick and easy project? One that you have been meaning to do for a quite some time? MOVE THAT ENGINE STOP CABLE! For some unknown, but I’m sure good reason, they located it inside the companion way on top of the engine compartment. Well after owning the boat for 10 years I finally relocated it to the helm.
The new and longer cable costs about $50.00 and I installed in one hour. I purchased it from:
http://shop.torresen.com/ships_store/index.php?p=details&mfc=Yanmar&sku=129470-67560
All you need is a 7/16 hole drilled in a convenient place (with space behind it, about 10" and not thicker than ½ "), a philips screwdriver, a 10mm and a 8mm opened wrench and some cable ties.
This is a photo of my installation.
Hope you finally do it like me!
Joe

Had mine on the engine panel and moved it below. No corrosion and worked like a charm for 15 yrs.

I'm glad I checked the furum today! I had posted the question of moving the cable on my Hunter 33.5 a month ago. Did you have any trouble re-routing it so that you had minimum turns in the cable? Do you have any pictures of the engine compartment where you used the new cable? Thanks.

I bet the guy who designed the engine stop cable in the companionway was the same guy who put the Yanmar water pump in facing aft.... He probably got a few billion in bonus money for his creativity.

Hi Ken,
I'm not sure my installation would be exactly the same for your boat but I'll post some photos that may help. I'll try to get them online by Saturday Sept 19th.

Photos of installation.
1) Cable inside helm with big loop
2) Where it attaches to engine.

You have to remove the deck behind the helm (4 screws) and the wall behind the aft bunk. Then just follow the other cable/wires to the engine compartment and remove the existing cable and replace it with the new one.

My wife isn't happy with you Joe. She's just seen me jot another job down that will take me away from home for a day. Thanks!

To: R Jackson,
I know “quality” family time is important but if she sails with you on your 29.5 she will appreciate it also. The real reason I finally moved it is because we got involved with a foundation called “Heart of Sailing”.

http://www.heartofsailing.org/default.asp

We volunteer our time to take people with special needs out sailing. It’s soooooo rewarding, even more than sailing itself! The interaction and response we get from the parents and children is overwhelming! It’s mostly children with Autism but not limited to that by any means.
Anyway, most of the children are very curious about the cabin, so we now put the hatch boards in the companion way to limit their access below. Ahhh, now how do we shut down the engine you ask? The reason I moved the engine stop is very clear now.
