An anyone tell me what kind of boat this is or how hard it would be to produce a title that's been lost? Traci g back to the previous owner may be an option. The seller doesn't know much about the boat at all but recieved it in a trade.

You might try looking for a serial number embedded in the hull, or inscribed on a plate stapled to it, near the transom area.

You can also try to decipher the registration number on the bow... in Ca. we call it a "CF" number... not sure what it's called in Wa. but it's like a car license plate and it doesn't change from year to year.

Take either, or both, numbers to DMV and ask for their help.

Good advice, you should be able to do the same thing with the trailer, they must have belonged to the same person. Trailer might be easier if it has a licence plate.

In California, the trailer's license is completely separate from the vessel it carries.

But as I look at the picture I can clearly see the registration number. In any event... a trip to the DMV website, or down to the office... will tell you what you need to know.. you'll have to request a new owner registration. You want the state you register the boat in to tell you what they require.

But.... wait... this is a job for the seller. If he wants to "GIVE" you the boat, then you might possibly do the leg work... but he should pay for it. Otherwise, he can't sell you something he can't prove he owns... not without paying some fees ... i.e. unpaid sales tax, license fees etc. and giving you a registration...and Ca. requires a "mussel" sticker now for all inland waters.

So, it's just like buying/selling a car from a private party. To operate the boat you must have current registration and proof of ownership. To keep it in a marina it must be insured... do your homework and stay protected.

Bottom line... research the CF number with the DMV.

Stockton I assume is in Missouri. Then on the front or bow is state registered number.
Which state you are in and assuming Missouri where you would tend to register the boat will determine.

I would research with the state the registration number is in first and see if it is still active. At least this would give you a beginning point. Also, obtain any documentation from the past owner and assuming it was a trade in at a dealership, they can give you whom the trade came in from and contact that person.

Also have the hull number which would be handy and you can research sailboat data to identify the manufacturer if it cannot be done either. Again it will be the state you live in as to what determines what will be needed, not California, Virginia, florida and so on but the state you would be registering the boat in.

Bear in mind that boats built prior to 1972 do not have the HIN on the stern That began that year.

And the ports a shaped wrong to be a Catalina.

If the boat doesn't have a HIN number he will have to make one. My Luger had no number so I made mine out of a piece of aluminum and a letter/number stamp set. The trailer also did not have a VIN number so the DMV had a metal one and the inspector attached it to the frame.

View attachment 84667[/I own one of these and would recognize it anywhere. I love mine, and sail it around the SF Bay. Great in shallow areas, and feels good in 'the slot', which has some deep water.]
