Need to replace the holding tank in 1992 Hunter 28. Anyone done this? Anybody know how to get it out? What to replace it with? Do I have to find an alternative place for the tank?

Henry, You have a fairly late model Hunter so

I think that getting information could be fairly straight forward. Greg at Hunter Marine could be a resource for parts and possibably manuals needed. I am surprised that your holding tank failed this quickly. Is there any possibility that something else failed such as a hose or clamp? Could it be a vent related problem? A job like this can be done by the owner if you are familiar with carpentry and mechanics. Otherwise it might be time to find a pro. Tanks are available from West Marine or Boats/US in alot of sizes and shapes. Using the original location is the easiest option. This also is the time to consider upgrading size if there is any room in this location to allow expansion. IMHO I would upgrade to the "Odorsafe Hose" offered by most marine supply houses. Nasty job! Do it once and do it right. Ray S/V Speedy

Check a couple of web-sites:

Recommendation to call Greg is a good one. If the tank really must come out just cut it up. Just be sure that the problem cannot be fixed where it sits. Peggy is offline for a few days but she would recommend Ronco tanks(Link below) and Sealand hoses. Ronco makes a very heavy duty tank in almost any size and shape you can imagine. Maybe something that will slip right in. Select "Tank Search" then a size to see all the options. They are also very helpful on the phone or via e-mail. For Sealand hose you need to find a dealer from: www.marinesanitation.com/Hose.htm

All fine advice from previous posts, but they haven't seen what you have. Henry, I've done it on my 1990 H28 and it was NOT easy to due to: 1) impossible location (under stern step and behind rudder post) 2) poor aluminum original fabrication (absolutely replace with plastic) 3) limited access to remove old tank and place new one. I wrote a brief discussion several months ago on this about my experience. You might check it out the archives. PS If you're the same Prof. Henry Milam from Drake email me and I'll share the inside details. Good luck!

Thanks for Info

Thanks to all for the holding tank advice. Good ideas. I may decide to put one in the cockpit lazerette rather than tackle the other one. Wildman...I looked at the archives. Is 6 gal. the biggest that fits? I can get a 13 gal. in the cockpit, but really hate to give up the space. And you are correct about who I am. Have now moved. Don't have your e-mail..perhaps you can e-mail me with it.
