Well I have completed my new rudder. I would put it up aganst Foss Foam any day. I think it came out great. It took 5 days and cost $300. See the pics on the photo forum. You be the judge. Let me know what you think and if you have any questions just ask. Later Scott

Re: rudder removal

Thanks for the information on your rudder job. I need to repair some delamination on the rudder of my 28.5. I'm considering removing it and doing the work at home this winter. How do you remove the rudder? I'm fairly capable of most "do-it-yourself" jobs. Is removal hard? Otherwise, I was just going to do the work with the rudder in place on the boat next spring. Thanks.

Nice job & thanks

Scott: Congratulations. And thanks for posting the pictures. BTW, how much did Foss Foam want to do this? Eric Lorgus s/v Explorer 87H285

Removing Rudder

Eric, FOSS FOAM wanted $800.00 plus all shipping to and from! That ends up being around $900+. A new one cost $1200.00. Mine cost just under $300.00,4 days and no shipping. Matt, If your boat is on a stand you will need to dig a hole where your rudder is. About 2ft should do. If you can't do this than you will need your yard to sling the boat up high enough to drop the rudder. Once you have the clearance to drop the rudder, you will need to block it so it won't fall out. That could be bad. After blocking you will need to get to the rudder gear. its a tight fit. Just unbolt everything (take notes so it all goes back togather right)clean and inspect. Now you can drop the rudder out. Have fun! P.S. This a great time to check your cutless bearing. If you need more info just e-mail me at MAXXWILK@CS.COM Later, Scott

Looks aren't everything

I checked out the picture and it looks good. Not to be the negative ninny (and believe me, I'm all about doing things myself, it's cheaper and usually better as we take our time more that the "boatyard guys"), but I would be curious on performance too. After you have a chance to give her a spin in a nice wind let us know what you thought about the balance of boat, weather helm, leward drift, etc. I didn't see your's to begin with, is the shape and dimensions the same as original? The leading edge looked a tad bulky compared to our 33.5 rudder that has a pretty sharp leading edge and even sharper trailing edge. Way to go. Doug
