I seem to recall that someone stated that the size of the flax packing for a Hunter 28.5 with the stock nylon stuffing box was quarter inch (6 mm). I can't find the message in the archives. Can anyone out there confirm that that is the right size? I'm also assuming that the washer in the gland is pressing the packing up against the bearing/spud nut (when the nut is tightened down on the gland) and needs to be somehow slid down the shaft prior to trying to remove the old stuffing or putting in new stuffing? Is that right? Anything else I should be aware of or know about in repacking the gland? Warren s/v CrewZen

3/4 is correct

Just be sure to make the cuts clean and snug between rings. The more rings the merrier, perhpas three. When you're done, it should last for 2-3 years. Do all this out of the water, otherwise the burbling will drive you batty.

Bill: Are you saying that 3/4 inch flax is the correct size rather than 1/4 inch, or am I misreading your post?

Flax packing

I wrote to Hunter and they advised using 3/16 inch flax packing. They also provided the following link as a generic guide for replacing the packing: http://catalog.com/bobpone/diyPackingGland.htm
