28.5 Forward Hatch Replacement Question

On September 4 and 5, Steve O. and S. Sauer wrote about replacing their forward hatches with Bomars. I need to make a replacement as well, but I see that West has two Bomars in their catalog which might do the job. One has a cutout size of 20"x 20" and the other 19 3/4" x19 3/4". Can anyone give me the West or Bomar model #s? One is listed as a Bomar Gray Low Profile, and the other is a Bomar Voyager series unit. Mine cracked when I was doing foredeck work and the rainy season is upon us!

Bomar Low Profile

It's been 3-4 years since I replaced the plastic hatches on my 1986 28.5 with the Bomar Low Profile hatches. It was nominally 20"x20" and a perfect drop-in fit leaving only a 1/8" perimeter sealant joint visible from the interior. Be aware that later 28.5's and the 28 (1989) had aluminum hatches and their sizes may be diferent. I replaced the mid bay hatch with a Bomar 9"x9" at the same time and had to use an orbital sander to vwery slightly widen the existing opening; then re-sealed the edges of the plywood with Marinetex. Now both are a perfect fit with a clean thin sealant line visible at the edges from inside.See the attached link for the Hunter 28.5 web site for any specific discussion for your model and year.

It's been a while...

It was probably 10 yrs ago when I did the change out, but I seem to remember that I ordered 20x20. I no longer own the boat; I moved up to a H333.

Bomar

My hatches where replaced before I purchased our boat. Bomar low profile was the replacement and they are great. I replaced the lens on the front this spring and it was 20X20. Google Bomar for replacement hatches or check West Marine. I called Bomar direct for replacement parts. Can't remember the number but found it in the archieves.John
