I own a 28.5 with a 16hp Yanmar and am looking to get into a "cleaner more accessorized" 28.5 with a 13hp engine. My question is, should I forgoe trading into a cleaner and more accessorized boat because of the decrease in engine hp? We are on the Jersey shore and getting in and out of the inlets is rough and need all the power you can get. Your thoughts are much appreciated.

I think the Yanmar 2GM20F 16hp OEM engine is a perfect match for the H28.5's hull shape and displacement. I'd stick with that, particularly if you need all the power you can get getting into/out of inlets.

Just be sure that you have the correct prop for your engine. If you need a little more push going through the inlet you may consider a 3 bladed prop (if you don't have one). The factory props were not always sized properly.

Thanks folks! Just making sure that the 13 hp wasnt more effiicient in tugging along than the 16 hp, else I cant understand why hunter would even consider a 13 hp on a boat this size.

Cheaper. Can you imagine a 9hp is standard for a 1997 h280?
