Has anyone installed a 6 gallon hot water heater on their 272LE? If so, I'd be interested in learning about your install and specifications as I'm considering installing one. Please advise, Ken kgelao@ibtechs.com

272LE with running hot and cold

Ken, I have a 6 gal water heater installed in my 'LE. Standard type operates from westerbeke or shore power. Mine was installed prior to my ownership,I believe from when the boat was new and although it works just fine there's a couple of things I would have done differently. The heater itself is installed in the bottom of the lazerette with a teak box over it that gives the locker a kind of false bottom in that spot (immediately above the muffler) I think that there is room high up against the bulkhead on the locker side from the 115v breaker. In any event it would be better mounted to the bulkhead rather than the locker floor as in my case. Either way there is need to install a vent valve in the cooling fluid circuit at the highest point near the heater inorder to avoid or bleed off an air lock that would prevent fluid flow as the unit is going to be higher than any point of the engine. The Westerbeke is equipped with fluid in/out ports just in front of and between the exhuast manifold/header tank and the thermostat housing. If you dont have this info I can email it. Also remember to allow for a drain to the heater itself for winter time. If you have any other question just shout. Regards Brian, 272LE "Hosanna"

I think the water heater was standard equipment ..

on the LE and you will probably find that the hot water lines are already installed ... On mine, with the Universal engine, the heater was removed by PO, and the two lines from the motor are just coupled together and sitting at the bottom of the lazerette. If I remember right the fresh engine hot water comes out of the engine ... flows through the water heater and then into the heat exchanger. There is a 110 ac double plug right there as well. You can just plug the unit in. But then there also should be another coupled loop that came from the water tank to the hot water line for the sinks. maybe a T off the cold water line. Those water heaters are pretty standard and used in a lot of boats right off the shelf. If I had the space I would mount it on the Wooden bulkhead behind the galley ... but that's where I put the racor, fuel pump, and the battery switch in a revamp a few years ago. Vic "Seven" #622
