I acquired my 272 late last season and have had lots of queries answered by other owners. Thanks guys. Here's another: My Owners Handbook says if you don't keep the lock nut tight on your stuffing box it could be spun off by shaft friction when in REVERSE GEAR. The OPPOSITE is true of my stuffing box: IT WOULD BE SPUN OFF IN FORWARD GEAR. I experimented by loosening the lock nut last week and that is exactly what happened. I find this disconcerting. I do three hours in forward for every three minutes in reverse. How many 272s have their stuffing box threads reversed like this? Anyone care to check? Anyone have a remedy short of removing the shaft?

Never had the problem

I've had the nut off to replace the packing twice and had no problems with the nut backing off after I tighten it. Don't know why yours is that way... not a clueTom

Do you have a lock nut?

Also don't have problem, will back off in reverse if lock nut is not tight. Which raises the question do you have a lock nut?Brian Clare

Sure, I have a lock nut. My point is that the owners' handbook says the box should screw off in the same direction as the shaft turns when in REVERSE (not a vulnerable situation if the lock nut is tight, but the book nevertheless warns you). In contrast mine screws off in the same direction as the shaft turns when in FORWARD (much more vulnerable because anyone can motor for hours at a time in forward). So, Tom and Brian, which way do you turn your box to remove it? Thanks again. Dennis
