272 outboard ?

Does anyone know what size outboard motor and what outboard bracket that I need for a 1987 O day 272.

2hp per 1000lbs?

I read an article by a surveyor who indicated he looks for roughly 2hp per 1000lbs of displacement as adequate power. That would indicate an outboard with about 10hp (there are lots of 9.9s to meet "less than 10hp" regulations) as the minimum for a 272. What bracket you use will probably be driven by whether you choose a 2 stroke or 4 stroke motor. The bracket manufacturers tend to indicate beefier mounts for the 4 stroke outboards.

Also Shaft and Prop

Hi,You will need a long shaft - 20" minimum or the prop will break out in anything but flat water and the prop pitch appropiate for your hull speed (6 kts). There are outboards built just for sail aux. with more gear reduction and room to swing a larger prop. Not essential but more efficient.You might also want to add a fin to the cavation plate of the outboard(see Davis) to prevent prop contact with the rudder - only needed on one side.Have fun!!
