Looking at either a 270 or 260. My question is how much more stability do I gain with the fixed keel vs water ballast? I've done the math CG vs CB on both boats, but wanted some insight from actual owners with practical experiance. I keep my boat on a mooring during the boating season, don't plan to do much trailering if any. Thanks John

I think it is much stiffer

the water ballast boats have virtually no healing resistance until you get to 10 or 15 degrees then they start to harden fast. I know the 260 is far more popular for because of the ease of trailering. One local dealer has a 2003 270 that he cannot get sold because so many prefer the 260. If I was keeping it in a slip year round, I'd get the 270. But I trailer at least five trips a year and launch at marginal ramps so I plan to upgrade to the 260 someday.

more stability

The fixed keel will sail better in heavy weather and will cost more for hauling and storage, if you have deep water to sail in its great. the swing keel is great if you sail in shallow waters being able to get close to the beach and not running aground and cost less for put in and take out. You must decide which is for you the flexability to trailer or more stability sailing,I also looked at the 260 but got the 290 and just love its sailing ability.

Well my two bobs worth

We sail in pretty heavy weather most of the year down here and I find the 260 really sails well. The old story, reef early and sail flat and fast. No anti foul, mooring or pen costs, worry and the beut ability to move on and venture into lakes, rivers and so forth. A truly fine small yacht that provides all the creature comforts plus excellent sailing characteristics.

260 or 270

no reason to get a water ballast if you are not going to trailer the boat with regularity. fixed keel version is more stable, points a bit higher and has more of a big boat feel to it. look around your area and you might find a used fixed keel that can be had at a good price.
