Cat 27 vs. Watkins 27

I have a Cat27 but almost bought a Watkins 27. The owner of the Watkins was quite candid and said that the diesel is very unreliable and he had gotten stranded several times while out sailing. Also it is a very heavy boat is really performs very poorly in light or medium air. The great thing about it is its size...it is the roomiest 27 inside that I have every seen. The Cat 27 sails like a dream. It is much lighter and performs well in all conditions. I have the model with an outboard in an enclosed well, and it is so easy to service the motor when needed. I would go with the Cat 27, but then maybe I am biased. Good luck,

how wil you use it

Base PHRF, Watkins 27 is 231, C27 is 213 (inboard diesal). C27 should be a good bit better performance. As noted above, Watkins has a bigger interior. YOu didn't say which year on either of these. Both are production boats, and Watkins had a rep in a few years of producing blistered hulls. If it were me, I'd base the decision on C27 for: better light air performance a known source for advice and parts "name" for easier resale when (not if) twofootitis stricks Tom Monroe Carlyle Lake (disclaimer ... I own a C27)
