I have a 1975 Catalina with motor mounted in cut-out in transom. Want to upgrade to a new Yamaha 9.9 or Honda 9.9, but the cut-out in the well is too small. Am considering having the cut-out enlarged, but concerned this may harm the strength/integrity of the hull. Anyone else have a problem like this?

engine standoff

Hi, I think I would consider a standoff to hang the engine off the transom. I learned the hard way that boats are like cars, once you do a big modification the next owner might not like it and so lower your resale value. However a external engine mount could be unbolted and the holes filled. Good Luck, wishing I had a 27'er Jay Beery

A bit of Caution...

A friend of mine had to enlarge his 76' Cat27 opening to fit a new larger motor only to find that it then bumped up against the rudder. He then had to carve out a portion of that as well. In hindsite he wished he had gone the route of closing out the hole, reinforcing the area and mounting on the transome. good luck..

Solved the 9.9 yamaha installation with hoist.

I purchased a hoisr that bolts to the transom from Breeze Industries phone 604-540-7778. These are great and completly eliminate cutting and the engine drops straight down no more tilting.
