Roger mentions some handicap numbers in the 26S video... How do the handicap numbers for the 4 26variations match up.. would seem that these numbers would separate the sales hype from the "true" performance.. how do these numbers match up to some of the closest competion? hunter, catalina, etc??????? cobraearl

rogers numbers..

I just went back to the OLD 26S video and found his numbers that he gives.. Roger says in his 26S video that the PHRF Handicap numbers are: Mac 26S 210 Catalina22 270 Erickson26 234 Catalina25 228 Catalina27 210 Erickson27 234 Cal25 222 Macgregor25 228 He says that in handicaping the Catalina22 vs the Macgregor26S that you allow 60 extra seconds for the Catalina to sail a mile vs the Mac. I saw some place that the Mac65 has a -49 handicap number.. :) :) :) Since these figures are probably 15 years old, I WONDER how the modern numbers line up and how they would look compared to the 26X and 26M handicaps. IF you were to assume 5 MPH as an average race speed, the average boat would do a mile every 720 seconds... the MAC26S would do a mile every 930 seconds (3.9 MPH) and the mac 65 would do a mile every 671 seconds (5.4 MPH) Mac26S 930sec = 3.9mph Cat 22 990sec = 3.6mph Eric26 954sec = 3.8mph Cat 25 948sec = 3.8mph Cat 27 930sec = 3.9mph Eric27 954sec = 3.8mph Cal 25 946sec = 3.8mph MAC 65 671sec = 5.4mph Do these numbers mean that all "trailer Sailers" are about equally slow???? Do these numbers mean that all "Short Boats" are equally slow??? Is it reasonable to assume that MOST "race boats" have a handicap near zero?? Just trying to understand. BTW, I tried to look the modern numbers up, but had no luck. CobraEarl

Calculating PHRF

PHRF calculaton is in seconds/mile. PHRF- The largest handicap fleets in the United States now sail under the Performance Handicap Racing Fleet (PHRF) system. The PHRF supplies a single correction factor that is applied regardless of the conditions of the race, but the numbers are assigned locally to reflect actual performance of the boat type sailing in local conditions. Both time-on-distance and time-on-time handicapping is used under PHRF. The basic time-on-distance formula is: TA = ( D x PHRF ) / 60 TA = Time Allowance in minutes D = course length in miles PHRF = rating in seconds per mile Subtracting the time allowance (TA) from the actual time it took the boat to sail the race (elapsed time or ET) equals the corrected time (CT). Utilizing PHRF for time-on-time corrections is done by first calculating a time correction factor (TCF). The simplest way to calculate TCF is; TCF = 600 / (480 + PHRF). Corrected time then equals elapsed time multiplied by TCF. More Information on PHRF Time on Time. Hope this helps. Steve P.
