260 Wheel drawbacks?

I'm considering a 260 purchase. I have been told conflicting stories on the 260 Wheel Steering. One person says it reduces the aft birth by about six inches, another says it does not. Does anyone know what is correct? Also, how wide is the aft birth in the 260 with wheel? Thanks, Bob H.

No Difference

There is no difference in the aft berth in either configurations. The cable and other wheel components are between layers in the deck. This is my first sailboat with a wheel and love it. Jim S/V Java

Aft berth size

The aft berth is athwart-ships. The max beam is 8'11 1/2" which is a little forward of the aft berth. I am almost 6' and can lay down with my head and feet having plenty of clearance.

wheel

I have had a tiller boat of this size and now a wheel. I love the wheel. gives lots of more room in the cockpit and with whe pedistal guard you have a place to mount lots of neat stuff like a table(Snap-on). I would definatel go with a wheel. I would also rig up a linkage between the rudder and your motor. There are several photos posted on this site, mine included. Go for it It is a great boat if it meets your needs, shallow draft, trailerable with lots of room. Corky

Thanks + sill looking for with.

Thank you for the informed relply's. After reading the reply's I guess I should have asked for the length of the aft birth, not the with. My wife and I sleep in a King size at home. The literature says the birth is a double, but gives no measurement in inches. Guess I'm asking one of you to take a tape measure along on your next outing. Thanks. Bob H.

Go with the wheel!

Hi Bob.... I just saw your letter and suggest that you get your 260 with the Edson wheel steerage. We've got one on our 260 and just love it.The wheel does not affect the aft berth...it's where we sleep and it's huge...as far as I know it's the same as if the boat had a tiller. We're the only sailboat with wheel steerage on our dock at the marina (Echo Bay Resort on Lake Mead) I know the other sailors wish they had it! Bet you didn't know there is great sailing in the desert! Good Luck...go for the wheel! MiMi & Rob Van Horn-Synchronicity
