i have heard from other mcgregor woners that she doesn't sail well. i have read a lot of positive feedback from H26 ownwers here.

Almost a 260 owner

I have owned a Mac26X, a Catalina 250WB ,and will soon be the owner of a Hunter 260. The 26X will sail OK when the wind is above 8 knots. Otherwise, it tends to drift sideways. We were so surprised the first time we entered a club race with the 26X. I had to use the motor to round the first mark or I would still be there. Everyone else sailed away from us. As far as sailing goes either the Cat or the Hunter win hands down. Of course, there is always that motor... which can get you from point A to B rather quickly. Also the 26X is much lighter and subsequently easier to trailer. The construction values of the 26X are not nearly as high as the Hunter or the Cat. There is soooooo much unfinished fiberglass on the inside. For a sailboat the Hunter would be and is my choice.

familiar with all three

There is no question hands down that the Hunter 260 will outperform the Mac 26X. Anytime you combine a plainning hull with a displacement hull, you will loose performance particualy on the sail side. One other manufacturer did this in the 70's and it was a bust. Crazy Dave Condon

My H240

My 240 has no problem out running the Mac. In fact the first time I passed one, I actually thought they were at anchor (but they weren't). Joe

H260 hands down

I originally liked the idea of a motor sailor, but after investigating more, I made the right decision and bought a H260. Crazy Dave helped convince me and I am glad I did. I bought the H260 last November and have had 11 great months of sailing since. If you like sailing, the H260 is the way to go.

Also.....

If you spend any time at all inside your boat, Hunter is not only the best choice, it's the ONLY choice. With my H26, I have a cabin at the lake for the price of slip rental, and a darn good sailboat as well !!!! John S/V Icymoon

heeling?

My main cocern is over heeling and rounding up into the wind. My Macgregor 26x does it all the time.I'm wondering if the hunter (haveing a water ballast that sits 1 foot deeper and a wider beam, will round up less.

Rounding up

Brad they will all round up. I think our 260 is pretty well set now with rake etc etc but she will still round up if I let go of the tiller. Certainly by getting the rake correct there is less weather helm. Besides I don't think rounding up is such a bad thing.
