260 Rudder Shaft

My rudder shaft has a 9/16's hole right through the shaft 7" above the lower bearing. I can see no mention or picture of this in the manual breakdown (52A-2). To me this looks like it was done at production rather than a later date. Is this hole for a steering link mechanism to the outboard or something else please? If anyone can direct me to more info on this, it would be greatly appreciated. Here's a pic for CD, I know how he loves pictures:biggrin:

Isn't this for the steering wheel option? Sorry, my boat is new to me.
Full marks for that man, I never thought of looking at the wheeled steering page, may be because we are tiller freaks on small boats this side of the pond. For me the hole can be now used and adapted for connection to the outboard. Cheers.

Yes, I believe your first guess is correct, it's to accept linkage from the outboard. The set up is the same on my 240 which did not have a wheel option.

Assuming the rudder was turned to starboard threw me off. If so then the hole is for attaching to a wheel steering. Therefore you have tiller steering?????
