Hey all. Is there any process for removing the Hunter 260 jib (on a CRI fuller) while the rig is up? Had a panel rip in the jib today and am hoping to remove the sail for a fast repair without having to unstep the mast.

Did you mean CDI furler? I don't have one but my understanding is that they have a halyard integral to the furler. I would think that halyard would allow you to lower the sail.

Thanks Peter. Found the CDI FF2 manual on another thread, and it looks like there is a halyard. Appears from the manual that one can lower the jib while the rig is up. Just requires fastening a messenger line to that halyard. Will be checking to verify vs the manual doc.

Cool. Any recommendation on dry lube spray? Using it on the feed of the bead (bolt rope?) into the luff extrusion?

@mikedholm

There is a lot of information on the 260 if you go to boat information/ hunter resources/260/downloads

There you will find the owner’s manual along with other information to include the CDI FF2 manual. The manual lists the 240 information as well so check the page that is appropriate for the 260.

In addition look at the 26 info as well as that was the forerunner to the 260. A good example are the instructions for replacing the centerboard line by @rgranger as it applies to both the 26 and 260

Thanks Dave, I'll go get some McLube. Centerboard mechanism seems fine so far (we've had the boat for just over a year), so hope that's one thing I can worry about later. Getting ready to put her away for the winter and do some projects while she's in the storage. Found many of the useful docs on the site, and on H260.com.

Not wishing to start a brew ha ha but you can get dry lubricant at a hardware store for a lot less than McLube. Blaster and WD-40 make one.

Thanks Andrew. Given lead times to order Sailkote, I might have to try an alternative. Between Blaster and WD-40 PTFE, do you have a preference?

Dupont also makes one, and it appears Sailkote uses the Dupont material. Maybe they've got a secret formula.

They may but I doubt it. I don't have a favorite but I'm using the Blaster product when I sail the Flying Scots, which are under maintained. It drives me crazy if I can't get the sails up all the way. It seriously lessens the joy of the sail. I bring gear to rig a Cunningham, and other improvements but really ... the sails should raise without undue friction. What's right is right - right?

I have a CDI furler on my O’Day 322. It has an internal wire halyard.

On my boat, there is a “car” in one of the foil grooves, that is pinned with a cotter pin about a foot or 2 from the bottom. The other end of the halyard is attached the top of the sail.

To lower the sail, first attached a strong messenger line to the “car”. Then carefully remove the pin. It would help,to have someone hold the car from flying up as the cotter pin comes out (I got hit in the eyebrow once…).

Then ease the messenger and pull the sail down.

To raise the sail, a secret I found on mine is to thread the messenger line (you will be pulling it down from the top of the foil) through the little turning “block” at the bottom of the furler, then you can pull up on the messenger, keeps the pull exactly parallel with the foil.

If the car and foil groove look really dry, you can either use Sailkote or even some grease to lubricate the car in the foil groove.

My CDI may be a bigger version than yours, but hopefully these notes are helpful.

I have a H26 with the CDI roller during. A couple of years ago I talked with CDI about the difficulty raising the jib and they recommend an improved cap at the top with a roller rather than just a path for the messenger line. I think it was about 80 bucks but what a difference.
