To those of you that have purchased the companionway cover for your Hunter 260, does it fit over the entire hatch area? The one that I was sent does not fit over the entire "raised area" that surrounds the companionway hatch. It stops on the non-skid area right in front of the hinges. When I pull it over the raised area, it won't fit over all of the companionway doors. Finally, the snaps that are attached to the cover are in odd areas. If I used these to secure the cover, there would be snaps right where the water drains are. Help!

Sounds the same as mine

Bruce, I started out installing my companionway canvas (H26) on the front side of the slope, then found out the same thing you have and had to fill those holes in. The cover now sits back from the mast about 4" and fits properly at the back. And yes, I have 2 or 3 snaps that just hang out in the air over the drains. I don't know is this is because it's built to accomodate different boats or what. Once it's installed it still looks pretty good and definately helps with the head room when overnighting. I wouldn't be without it now. Jim Covey

companionway cover

My cover fits over the whole hatch from near the mast to below the boards. I have two snaps that are at the drains up front but there plenty of snaps on either side. I got mine the the HOW web site. It sure keeps the cabin cleaner of dust, warmer in cool weather and the boards nice. Corky

cover with doors?

I have a h26 and am thinking of getting the doors that are available at the HOW store. Has anyone tried them? Hatchboards are a pain. Will the cover work with the doors? Thanks.

Cover...?

Bruce, Are you referring to the pop-top camper canvas or the companionway cover that goes on when the boat is not in use? When I installed the cover that goes on when the boat is closed up I initially started with the two snaps at the base of the companionway door, then the two snaps at the forward corners of the pop-top hatch, then the rest. Hope that helps. Tom M.

What is the best way to install snaps?

My companionway cover arrived today . . .Do you need to drill small pilot holes when installing the snaps into the fiberglass?... Or just screw them in? How about epoxy or 5200 as an added hold? Are there any "tricks" to geting the snap fit/placement correct?Somehow I get nervous everytime I consider putting holes in my boat . . .Help . ..

You need pilot holes.

Start with the cover laid over the companionway. I would begin with the snaps at the bottom of the opening first. With the cover in place, rap the snap on the cover with a hard object to make a light mark on the fiberglass. Now drill a pilot hole in the center of that mark and install the male screw-in snap piece using a small dab of sealant on the hole before screwing in the snap. Do this for the snaps in the bottom of the opening first. Then snap the cover on these snaps and go to the other end of the cover and do the same making sure that the cover is smooth and aligned properly. After bothe ends are secure, go to the sides and alternate between both sides making sure the cover is in the proper position and not to one side or the other. After each snap is installed, secure the cover to that snap. This will help in getting all the snaps located in the proper position. Take your time and all should go well.

Bob's Advice

Follow bob's advice and it will go well. I did it slightly differently but I think his way is better. I like the idea of hitting the ssnap to mark the location. Ddo as he advises and it will go well. You will like having a cover. Keeps the dirt out, keeps the boards looking better and keep the cabin wrmer in the spring and fall. Corky

installing snaps Easy

Yes we drilled pilot holes when we installed the snaps for our companionway cover. We we then bedded eash snap in a good marine sealant to prevent water from getting into the holes and then tightened the snap down snug. We started forward and worked our way back on both sides. First we laid the cover out into position and got into position. Don't stretch it too tight as that will put un-neccessary strain on the snaps. With 2 people working, it took less than an hour.

Where's the photo

Where can I locate a photo of the one being sold by HOW? There is only a description in the HOW website store.

Forum Photo??

The photo in the Forum was put there by an owner who had his cover custom made. It does not show the cover available on HOW. I am looking for a photo of the cover offered by HOW that is installed on a Hunter 260.

There was a discussion earlier about this, check the archives. Tom

Companionway Cover

We got our cover from the HOW store. It looks very similar to the one in the photo forum. ( but without the strap to hold up the center for rain runoff.) We will not be going to the lake for a few weeks, but will take a picture of ours next time we go.
