I've got a 26 years old O'Day 272 LE ....the boat is currently out of the water. How can I
tell if I need to replace the cutlass bearing...the boat is in an inlade lake in Kansas....the prop shaft look's like it has been sliding up and down maybe 3/4 of an inch...i suppose going from
forward to reverse...nothing looks damaged....I have not turned it, or wiggled it since out of the water althogh I can easily enough. What do I do to check it while the boat is on a cradle?

thanks so much for all your posts and your site....Your information on the Westerbeke
heat exchangers has been most helpful.

Have a really great spring and thanks for the reply.

Your prop shaft shouldn't move back and forth at all. Have you tried to move it manually? Check the four bolts that hold the transmission to the prop shaft. Check for thghtness. Cutless Bearing. Move the prop shaft up and down and all around. If it feels sloppy it needs changing

I agree with the manner with the inspection. I have an O'Day 28 and have changed my Cutless Bearing because there was movement of the shaft at the Cutlass Bearing which is in the shaft strut. If you find the shaft sliding for & aft in the Cutless Bearing you will need to check the attachment of the shaft (thru the shaft Log) to your Transmission.

I agree with both the above answers - wiggling the shaft will tell you if you need to replace the cutless bearing - a lousy job, that you can do yourself, but if the shaft is directly in line with you rudder, you may need to drop your rudder - obviously you do this before launch. Now if you have a bronze shaft, as I did, you may find significant wear at the stuffing box area. You might want to consider replacing the bronze shaft (which could be refurbished) with one of stainless steel. Any good machine shop should be able to replicate your shaft for $200-300. When our boats were built, stainless shafts were a luxury, so they used bronze. Now the price of copper has shot up, and stainless is so common, that most builders use stainless shafts. If you go the stainless route, make sure the shop uses "shaft" stainless rod for the replacement.

The rudder on a O'Day 272 is Transom Hung. I remove mine every year for winter storage. It is too heavy for me to remove alone, but one of the yard employees is always ready to help. I just had the yard quote me on cutless bearing R&R. Less than $150.00 with my supplied Cutless bearing. With their quote they will completely re-align the engine mounts to the newly installed bearing. and... and that proceedure is really worth it! My new uninstalled Bearing is made by: Johnson Duramax purchased from Deep Blue Yacht Supply. My 272 has a 1" diameter Stainless Steel propeller Shaft. The inside diameter of my strut is 1-3/8", THE INSIDE DIAMETER OF YOUR STRUT MAY BE DIFFERENT! So, use a dial caliper to measure yours. Check out this: Best of Luck
