Hi, has anybody fitted a 'roller boom reefing system'. I have one brand new (not fitted)and have no idea whether they are good, or outdated as has been suggested to me. This model furls around a rotating boom

roller boom

It is outdated in my opinion. I have one on my Mac25 and have never used it. I had a set of reef points added to my sail instead, plus the rolling boom doesn't work with the lazy jacks I installed. Basically my thoughts are if I need to reef I don't want someone up on the deck trying to roll the boom, etc. Chris M25 Chara

One use

Back when I had a V222 and kept it always on the trailer, I found the roller boom handy for leaving the sail on when stowing boom and sail in the cabin between sails. I never used it for reefing, as it was easy to take the whole thing down belowe if I saw the wind rising beyond 15mph. I once did 6 knots under completely bare poles at the edge of a tornado. I was kinda glad I had no boom or sail up at all.

Boom rolled reefing

Most find it a pain to roll the main on the boom in a blow. Slab reefing is usually easier. BUT Jiffy reefing systems make the whole thing a snap compaired to slab reefing. I have rigged for Jiffy reefing. It's really the safest, fastest, and easiest way to take a reef. Also, you can't use your boom vang when you roll reef, around the boom, and in a blow, that's when I'm tightening up on the vang too. You can't use lazy jacks with roller reefing either. Your choice, but think about it before doing a bunch of work and spending any money.
