26.5 Stanchion Damage

Hello Hunter People!
First time poster, long time lurker...
Visited my 1987 26.5 a few days ago and came across a severely bent stanchion. I've included a few pictures for review. Couple of (initial) questions:

What in world did this?!? - my only thought was somebody was taking a fall from the dock and decided to grab my stanchion to stay upright.

It appears to be the base that buckled. I don't think the post is separable from the base so I've begun to search for a replacement as I'm afraid to try to 'bend' back in fear of damaging the deck. The bases are different on the shop.sailboatowners.com site so I'm asking if anybody has suggestions and/or recommendations.

This site has provided so much information for me and I'm looking forward to learning more (I just wish my first post was something more uplifting!).

Jeff:

Give them a call at the Hunter Store (on this site). They should be able to help you out.

I _think_ we have a pattern for that one or if not, we can figure it out. I think Hunter used about 2,379 stanchion designs. :)

They just used whatever 'Stanchions "R" Us' had in stock that week! ;^)

While removing your stanchion may at first seem like a huge project...
It's the first step.
You may need someone to hold a tool on one side while you work on the other.
Once it is off the boat, any good SS Fabrication shop can repair it and buff it out like new. Better, most likely.

I have had bent stanchions and pulpits repaired, and the results are 100% invisible.

If you cannot find such a shop/person in your fair city, I would guess that some of your list-mates can suggest a name nearby.

If you are not able to see any nuts/washers inside the boat, the bolts are probably screwed into an aluminum plate encapsulated in the fiberglass deck structure which was typical for Hunter. I am not sure as it has been many years ago when I sold that particular model but wanted to add my two cents worth. You will hear to use butyl tape, silicon, 4200 and others. Do not use 5200 as a sealant when replacing the Stanchion. Also when going thru the site store, include a photo and diemensions of the stanchion of one not damaged to include the base.

Jackdaw, do you agree that Satan's glue or 5200 is not suggested here

Oh for sure. Stanchions fail all the time, and you need to be able to get them off. Breaking the 5200 bond will pull the gellcoat off the fiberglass. Personally I would use butyl tape here.

The only place I like to see 5200 is on the hull/deck joint.

I agree with Jackdaw. Butyl tape is the right stuff for this. Even is you never replace that stanchion again, it will probably see a lot of use and therefore is likely to see some movement at the base. Butyl tape stays flexible and sticky and will be able to prevent water intrusion better than any goop that dries or cures
