I am a novice sailor, purchased a used 250, great shape but one issue. It has a wheel vs the rudders I had on a 25 whne I last owned aboat 10+ years ago. When under sail with main and joib up, very difficult to hold. When gust hits, stern swings away from wind even if I hang my 200lbs on the wheel. I have had center board fully down, mid-way etc. Shgould it be this ddifficult to steer? even under motor, steering is sluggish.

wheel problems

Jim; Does the wheel turn freely in neutral, and when motoring without sails ? If so, it could be a sail balance situation. The wheel should have a light feel when for and aft sail areas are balanced and trimmed. You will feel more pressure in gusts, but not 200 pounds worth. Experiment with jib and mainsail combinations in the same wind. Good luck.

thanks for the reponse

Ron, Thanks very much for the response. Something must need correction in the steering cable/system. It is anything but free wheeling, even in nuetral.

Ron again

Jim; One more thought......could the wheel brake on the pedestal be seized ? I always turn the knob fairly snug when not sailing, but must remember to back it off before sailing. I always turn the wheel completely in each direction before leaving the slip to make sure nothing has interfered with the steering.

Thanks Ron

Thanks again Ron, I'll give it a try. Embarrassed to say I am not familiar with the mechanics of the pedestal. I'll bone up on the manuals left on board. I truely appreciate your comments.
