I am restoring a 1979, 25 Oday (CB). The hull is in very good condition but the stern experience water intrusion through the lower rudder gunion and possible from the lower outboard engine mounting bracket bolts. I approached the problem from the inside (under the cockpit) cut away the fiber glass and removed the entire core. It appears the original was half (1/2) inch marine plywood bedded to the stern with a compound similar or Marine-tex.®
My approach is to replace the half (1/2) inch plywood with two one quarter (1/4) inch layers of marine plywood . My concern, I will not have the ability to mold the half (1/2) inch plywood to the contour or the shape of the stern; where as one quarter (¼) inch provides greater flexibility. My intentions are to bed the first layer of plywood against hull with a polysulfide or Marine-tex® epoxy.. This will fill any small voids between the hull and the plywood. Then apply a layer of fiberglass epoxy (West-system) then apply the second sheet and apply three layers of glass and cloth.
The required bolt holes and cockpit discharge hole will be drilled oversized and epoxy to the appropriate size. The other though is to fiberglass or epoxy in stainless steel bushings.
Is there a better approach that I should consider? Please advise.
