In reading Roger & Susie Mummah's narrative of their expedition to the Bahamas in the Hunters At Sea forum, I ran across this in their Report #9: "Incidentally, a Hunter 25.5 was anchored next to us overnight and they took off for Nassau this morning. The boat is "Debbie Ann" and there are two adults and a small child aboard. We were next to them at the Marina in Nassau in mid Dec and they spent the winter months in George Town. Wish we could have made it that far. Oh well, another time. " I didn't find a 25.5 by that name in the Owners Directory but I would love to hear an account of their adventure. Anyone else sailed their big little 25.5 out there in the Big Water? Dick Vance H-25.5 "Honey Bear"

What would you describe as big water other than the ocean or just the ocean. We sailed Memoral Day weekend on Erie in 6' witha rouge 8' or so. The boat handled it fine. By the way we have decided to sell up and move to the Sinshine state and have gotten our plans started. We sell the house next year and get a apartment. Then we will decide to buy the bigger boat to live on in the 40 ft range or somthing smaller and use it as a steping stone to a house. So we are now looking at the big boats to see what will work. We will be getting jobs there and more than likely live on a boat. Cliff

Bahama's Cruising

Hi Dick, How are things up in Tennessee? Still shopping for property but hope to have it done before summer is over. You asked about big little boats and Bahama Cruising. There are lots and lots of boats in the 25-30 foot range that make the crossing all the time. Race week in the Abaco's starts next week and there will be 100 sail boats from SE Florida going over. It is a great time to go, lots of partners to sail with to help keep a eye out on each other and when you arrive, you race a day, party the next, move on to another isleand and race again then party, this goes on for about 10 days and is just great fun. The raceing generally is in light air the water is crysal clear and a shallow draft boat is the best. The only hard part, and that is generally not to hard is the sail over. You cross the gulfstream and must account for that in you navagation, you must account for the 3 knot northerly push. You must also pick a good weather window, but this time of year the weather is the most predictable. You need to come on down some time and give it a try. Of course there are alternatives. There are many charter fleets availble. We even had some of our friends charter a boat to do Race week in the Abaco's a couple of years ago. He was between boats but did not want to miss this grand time. Hope to talk to you some. Darrel Richards

Big Salty

Cliff, I was mainly thinking of extended cruising or voyages in the Caribbean or other oceanic environs. We both know the 25.5 is a good boat but my curiosity was piqued by the thought of the S/V Debbie Ann out there with her limited systems where conditions are sometimes unpredictable; anchorages, communications, weather forecasts and facilities are less reliable and doing it over an extended period of time. I'd like to hear her owner's story and any others who have gone cruising in a 25.5. Dick

Darrel

Hi Darrel, I've seen liveaboards in the Bahamas in Cat. 22's! Didn't look like much fun but that's the boat they had. No question many small boats cruise the Bahamas and beyond but I was specifically interested in such ventures in "our" 25.5's. I once crossed the 'Stream from Lauderdale to Bimini in a 45' Hatteras Sportfish. We left in ideal conditions with a good forecast for what should have been a few hours cruise. It didn't turn out that way as one of those "Tropical Weather Events" sprang up and thrashed us pretty good. We had 10' seas on the nose and 25-30 knot winds which made us throttle back and take a lot of water over the bow. A couple of fair sized sailboats straggled in to Weech's the next morning pretty well beat up. I'm glad I wasn't in "Honey Bear" for that one! Dick

Size doesn't seem to matter

I have seen Catalina 22's and other small sailboats anchored in Nassau Harbour. I guess the desire to get there is what matters most. Peter S/V Raven
