25.5 Cockpit drains, bad design??

I just purchased a 1985 Hunter 25.5. Looking at the cockpit drains I assumed (I know, bad mistake), that they had been reworked. Poorly, I might add. But, looking at other 25.5's I see that this is evidently factory work. My question is, Is there any way to improve on that design, or am I overreacting.

Pitiful Portals

Kevin, My '85 25.5 has a small drain through the stern at each side of the cockpit, approximately 3/4" diameter. They are woefully inadequate and easily stopped up due to their small size. Fortunately, I sail on an inland lake where the only water coming into the cockpit is from rain but I do plan to instal a couple of larger drains using thru-hull type fittings of at least 2" diameter. Another possible solution would be a floor drain at the rear of the cockpit but this would require penetrating the deck and running a flexible hose out the stern. However, this could be a real leak source into the aft berth area if not done properly. If sailing coastal or anywhere large waves could be encountered, this is one of the first things that should be corrected. Dick Vance H-25.5 "Honey Bear"

The 75 H30 was the same way.

I doubled the cockpit scuppers to inch and a half. Word of warning. Good hose at that diameter is almost unworkable in short lengthes with skew connections. I had to down grade my hoses to make it work.
